Educational Gap For Minorities Of Low Socioeconomic Statuses

It is our duty as the church of Jesus Christ to stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves and have their rights continually violated. The next two paragraphs detail some examples of how this can be done in regards to closing the educational gap for minorities of low socioeconomic statuses. At my home church, Tabernacle Baptist Church of Youngstown, Ohio, education was heavily emphasized. As a child, I was always taught that education was and is the way out for Black people. The church indoctrinated that into all of the children’s minds once they came to the church. Two important things I learned at church was the importance of having a relationship with Jesus and the importance of having high-quality education for Blacks. My pastor would ask for everyone’s report cards at the end of every grading period. If your grades were not up to par, you had to attend the after-school program at the church. Because our church has many current and retired educators, students received high-quality tutoring five days a week, free of charge. This was not only offered to the members of the church but also members of the surrounding community. When student’s grades improved, they were offered incentives such as trips to Cedar Point, college tours, and even money. Th is after-school program took place for roughly 15 years before it closed due to low attendance. In addition to this endeavor, my church is currently a site for the Children’s Defense Fund Summer Freedom School.
